JOURNALISTS ARE PROFESSIONALS, NOT BEGGARS” – IGP DISU SETS OUT PLAN FOR MEDIA

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has emphasized that Nigerian journalists are professionals, not beggars.

IGP Disu praised journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for their pivotal role in keeping the public informed and supporting national development.

He made the remarks on Saturday during the FCT NUJ Congress held in Abuja.

The IGP described his relationship with the media as one grounded in mutual respect and professionalism.

Disu emphasized that under his leadership, Nigerian journalists would be treated with the highest regard, acknowledging the media’s crucial role in society.

“I have always maintained a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with journalists. They are professionals who deserve respect and should never be treated as beggars,” he stated.

In response, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, congratulated the new IGP on his appointment, describing him as a long-standing friend of the press.

She expressed confidence in his leadership and assured him of the council’s willingness to collaborate with the police in reporting security issues accurately and objectively.

Ike also announced that the IGP would be invited as a special guest to the council’s 2026 Press Week celebration.

She reaffirmed the NUJ FCT Council’s commitment to promoting responsible journalism and supporting initiatives that strengthen security and governance within the territory.

In a related development on Saturday, over 150 journalists registered for the Federal Capital Territory Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS).

Commenting on the initiative, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, urged philanthropists, political office holders, religious leaders, and business executives to support journalists by sponsoring their health insurance coverage.

In her address, Comrade Grace Ike stated, “Today marks a historic milestone for the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council. For the first time in our council’s history, we are launching a health insurance program specifically aimed at enhancing the welfare and well-being of journalists in the Federal Capital Territory.”

Additionally, the National President of the NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, praised the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward improving healthcare access for journalists.
