King Charles III on Wednesday humorously joined the ongoing West African jollof rice debate, joking that he could not remember whether the “best” jollof rice he recently tasted at a royal event was Nigerian, Ghanaian, or Senegalese.

The monarch made the remarks while highlighting Nigeria’s significant impact on British life during a state banquet hosted in honour of Bola Tinubu.

During his speech, King Charles recalled a recent event at St James’s Palace where the dish sparked playful debate among guests.

“Only last week I was delighted to host a rather lively group of them for a jollof and tea party at St James’s Palace. I was firmly assured that the jollof was only the best, Nigerian of course, or perhaps it was Ghanaian or Senegalese,” he said.

“Diplomatically, I cannot remember,” King Charles III quipped, highlighting the long-standing culinary rivalry among West African countries over which nation makes the best jollof rice, a beloved staple across the region.

Beyond the lighthearted moment, King Charles III used the banquet to highlight Nigeria’s growing cultural influence in the United Kingdom
