NAFDAC DESTROYS N939M OF FAKE DRUGS IN ANAMBRA

Agency Report
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has destroyed counterfeit and substandard drugs worth over N939 million in Awka, as part of its ongoing crackdown on unsafe products.
The destruction took place on Friday at the Anambra State Waste Management dumpsite and involved items seized from across the South-East region, under the supervision of NAFDAC officials.
The operation targeted expired, unwholesome, and falsified products, including medicines, food items, cosmetics, and medical equipment.
Representing NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye, Regional Director Martins Iluyomade said, “Today, we are destroying products with a total estimated street value of N939,077,209. These items were seized through NAFDAC’s routine surveillance, enforcement operations, and intelligence-led interventions across the South-East.”

He cautioned that the agency will continue to uphold a zero-tolerance policy against violators, stressing that such enforcement forms part of a coordinated national effort to safeguard Nigerian consumers.
“Let me make it clear that NAFDAC will not tolerate anyone who jeopardizes the lives of Nigerians through the production, importation, distribution, or sale of fake, substandard, or expired regulated products,” said Martins Iluyomade.
The agency added that some of the seized items were voluntarily surrendered by stakeholders, including members of the National Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers in Anambra State and Enugu State.
NAFDAC urged the public to buy only products bearing valid NAFDAC registration numbers and to report any suspicious items or activities.
The agency warned that the destroyed products posed significant health risks, including treatment failure, prolonged illness, and even death, underscoring the importance of its ongoing efforts to protect consumer safety.
