Former presidential adviser Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has advised Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to recalibrate his political approach if he hopes to secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition’s presidential nomination.

Speaking with the media on Thursday , Baba-Ahmed assessed Obi’s prospects within the opposition coalition, contrasting them with those of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

According to Baba-Ahmed, Atiku currently holds a distinct edge in a convention-based primary due to his extensive experience in party politics and deep understanding of internal democratic processes.

“Vice President Atiku is head and shoulders above all other candidates in terms of navigating a convention,” Baba-Ahmed said. “He has the experience, wider reach, stronger structures, and more loyal supporters. He understands the mechanics of internal party politics better than anyone else.”

While acknowledging Obi’s national visibility and grassroots appeal, Baba-Ahmed warned that his current strategy may not suffice in a coalition environment dominated by seasoned politicians.

“I think Governor Peter Obi and his team are not fully leveraging his strengths,” he said. “He is highly engaged with the public and has remarkable grassroots presence, which is a strong point. He is one of the most widely travelled politicians in recent times, staying connected with communities nationwide, which works in his favour.”

However, Baba-Ahmed stressed that Obi must adjust to the realities of the race and the caliber of competitors within the ADC coalition.

“What he needs to do now is sit with his team and accept that he is running against seasoned political actors who are equally determined to win the nomination,” he said.

He also urged Obi to adopt a more measured approach to managing supporters and internal party tensions, taking a leaf from Atiku’s playbook in avoiding public confrontations.

“What Vice President Atiku did—advising his supporters to remain calm and not engage in public insults—was the right approach,” Baba-Ahmed said. “Peter Obi should do even more in that regard.”
