CDS MUSA: TERRORISM FINANCIERS IN NIGERIA IDENTIFIED, PROSECUTION UNDERWAY
By Aishat Momoh. O.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, says the Federal Government is actively tracking and prosecuting terrorism financiers in Nigeria, though the process is slowed by legal and international complexities.
Speaking on a Television program on Thursday, Gen. Musa revealed that many terrorism sponsors receive funds from abroad, while relying on local operatives to circulate money through designated accounts.
“We know them,” he said. “The local ones normally employ a few individuals, provide motorcycles for them, and those ones remit funds daily into certain accounts. It’s being tracked. That’s why it’s important for us to follow the funds.”
He commended the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) for its role in exposing financial links to terrorism, noting that arrests have already been made. According to him, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, are working closely with the DSS, NIA, DIA, and other security agencies to dismantle the financial networks.
On alleged political sponsorship of insecurity, Musa stressed that intelligence agencies are monitoring politicians suspected of funding banditry and terrorism ahead of the 2027 elections.
“You cannot rule out the fact that some individuals are making sure there is no peace,” he warned. “The funny thing is, how do you want to kill the people you want to govern? What do you gain from it?”
The CDS further called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s justice system to fast-track terrorism cases.
“We have to review our legal system because prosecution takes too long. Maybe if we have a special court that will treat terrorism cases quickly. I also think we need to review punishments for such offences,” he said.
