COURT REMANDED MAN FOR ALLEGEDLY TAKING LIFE OF 11-YEAR-OLD HOUSEHELP

Anthony Onyeukwu, 47, has been placed under detention by the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Enugu East due to the death of his houseboy, Goodluck John, who was 11 years old.
According to a statement released on Sunday by Ngozi Enih, the Commissioner of Gender, this action “is a part of Enugu State’s ongoing efforts to combat child abuse.”
Onyeukwu’s arrest came after a tip came through the ministry’s whistleblower channels, Enih said, indicating that Goodluck’s death was caused by domestic violence.
It was stated that Onyeukwu claimed Goodluck passed away at the Park Lane Hospital in Enugu from an ailment and hurriedly buried his remains in Abia State without informing the authorities. She stated, however, that hospital records refuted her assertion, indicating that the body was not admitted nor deposed.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Calista Ifeanyi, argued that Onyeukwu’s actions are punishable under Enugu State’s Revised Criminal Code when arraigning the suspect last week, according to the statement. He said the case demonstrated the state’s commitment to upholding the Child’s Rights and Responsibility Law of 2016’s provisions regarding the protection of children’s rights and the prevention of abuse.
The charge sheet marked: CME/631C/2024 read, “That you, Onyeukwu Anthony, ‘m’ on 15th day of October 2024, at about 20:30 hours at No. 4, Mike Onyeka Close, Loma Linda Extension, Maryland, Enugu, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did unlawfully kill one Goodluck John ‘m’ aged 11 years and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 274 (1) of the Criminal Code, CAP 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.”
The suspect was then placed under remand at the Correctional Center in Enugu by the Chief Magistrate, who also postponed the case to November 20, 2024, when the Director of Public Prosecutions from the Ministry of Justice in Enugu was anticipated to provide a report.
