Nollywood actor and filmmaker Deyemi Okanlawon has argued that mediocrity is more likely to be rewarded than professionalism in Nigeria.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Dear Ife podcast, Okanlawon described Nigeria as a society where mediocrity often flourishes at the expense of excellence.

He cautioned that being “too professional” could hinder an individual’s chances of success and career advancement, suggesting that the system does not always reward competence.

“In a country where mediocrity reigns, you can’t be too serious. I once joked that you can’t be too professional and succeed in Nigeria. Those who appear the most unserious often succeed the most.

“I have realised that you have to tone your intellect down a lot to succeed here,” he said.
