EDO POLICE BAN FIREWORKS, WARN RESIDENTS AGAINST ‘BANGERS’ AHEAD OF FESTIVE SEASON

The Edo State Police Command has issued a strong warning against the sale and use of fireworks during the festive season, declaring popular “bangers” and “knockouts” illegal and dangerous to public safety.
In a statement released on Sunday in Benin, the command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, said the widespread use of fireworks in recent days has raised security concerns, especially at a time when security agencies are on heightened alert.
Yamu noted that the loud explosions from fireworks often cause panic, trigger false security alarms, and create avoidable emergencies. He stressed that the use of fireworks is prohibited under existing laws.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the use of fireworks constitutes a nuisance and is prohibited under relevant laws,” he said. “Anyone found selling, purchasing, or using bangers will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.”
He urged parents and guardians to caution their children, and warned traders against stocking the banned items.
According to him, the command has intensified surveillance across communities to enforce compliance and ensure a peaceful yuletide season.
“The command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents throughout the festive season and beyond,” he added.
Yamu encouraged residents to report individuals who sell or use fireworks, noting that the police control room hotlines remain open for emergencies and information.
