The Federal Government has unveiled plans to establish cattle breeding centres across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones as part of ongoing efforts to modernise livestock production and enhance national food security.

This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, during the second day of the Citizens-Government Engagement and Midterm Assessment of the Tinubu administration, organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kaduna.J

According to a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the administration’s commitment to revamping the agricultural sector.

Abdullahi said the centres would serve as modern livestock hubs, shifting the country away from traditional herding practices to a more structured and economically viable system.

“The synergy and collaboration of the ministries of agriculture, environment, water resources, livestock development, and the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy are imperative for delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

He added that the move would help reduce recurring farmer-herder clashes, improve meat and dairy production, and drive Nigeria toward food self-sufficiency.

The development comes after the National Economic Council (NEC) in April called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s livestock rearing system, describing it as outdated and unsustainable in light of recent violent clashes in Plateau, Benue, and Kwara states.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri said NEC stressed the importance of modernising animal husbandry in line with global best practices.

“Council emphasised the fact that we cannot continue to live in the past, and we must now work towards modernising livestock production in Nigeria,” Diri stated.
