A midnight fire on Wednesday razed 28 shops at the popular Kara Market in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The inferno, which began around 1:35 a.m., destroyed 22 plank shops and six container shops before it was brought under control by operatives of the Kwara State Fire Service.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, attributed the outbreak to negligence by a trader.
“It was reported that a shop owner, who was cooking late at night, failed to properly extinguish the fire. The flames later reignited and spread quickly because of the large number of wooden structures in the area,” Adekunle said.
He explained that timely intervention by firefighters prevented the blaze from engulfing more shops, noting that the market contains 323 shops, including 22 plank shops and seven kiosks.
“The quick action of our men stopped a bigger disaster,” Adekunle added, while urging traders to be more safety-conscious and ensure fires are completely put out after use.
