The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) says emerging evidence suggests that many of the terrorists attacking communities across Nigeria are foreigners, not Nigerians.

The group made the claim after reviewing an online video showing armed men conducting an assault on a rural community.

In a statement issued on Saturday, November 22, 2025, the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, said the video indicates that the attackers “spoke no Nigerian language” and did not resemble indigenous extremist groups.

According to the statement, “We have come across a video clip showing terrorists in one of their devilish attacks. The place appears to be a newly deserted poor community but the attackers who were in large number spoke no Nigerian language. They spoke no Hausa, no Kanuri or any Nigerian tongue.”

Akintola noted that the group’s leader issued instructions in Arabic, but the speech patterns did not match classical Arabic or the type spoken in northern Nigeria.

“The leader issued commands to his foot soldiers in Arabic language but his Arabic was neither classical nor standard. Neither did his Arabic sound like anywhere near that of Northern Nigeria. It sounded more like Chadian or Sudanese Arabic,” he said.

MURIC therefore believes the attackers are largely foreign fighters.

“On the basis of this observation, we are inclined to assume, ceteris paribus, that the terrorists attacking Nigerians, or at least a large majority of them, are mainly foreigners.”

The group reiterated its long-standing condemnation of extremist groups who commit atrocities in the name of Islam, insisting their actions contradict the core teachings of the religion.

“Once again, MURIC reiterates its condemnation of terrorists and their criminal, nefarious and diabolical activities. It is paradoxical that these terrorists have adopted ‘Allahu Akbar’ as their slogan but their atrocities contradict the peaceful tenets of Islam.”

Highlighting Islam’s protection of human life and vulnerable groups, Akintola said terrorists violate every moral and religious principle.

“For whereas Islam teaches kindness and tenderness towards women, children and other vulnerable persons, terrorists kill, kidnap and traumatise them. Again, whereas Islam places premium value on human life…terrorists kill their fellowmen at will.”

He suggested that “powerful anti-Islam forces (or countries)” may be sponsoring the attackers to tarnish the image of Islam, adding that global conspiracy theories about extremist networks support this view.

MURIC urged Nigerians—regardless of their faith—to unite in backing security agencies and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“MURIC urges Nigerians to stand firm with their country and their government. Terrorists are killing both Christians and Muslims. We are all victims. We must kill the killers, not the victims.”

The organisation also called for national solidarity against terrorism, saying both Muslims and Christians must work together to eliminate the threat.
