Former Senator representing Ogun Central and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging disrespect, rejection, and poor treatment from the party’s leadership in Ogun State.

Prof. Obasanjo, who recently sought the APC governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections, announced her resignation in a letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun State Chairman of the party, Chief Yemi Sanusi. A copy of the letter was made available to journalists on Monday.

The US-based Associate Professor of Epidemiology criticised the consensus process that produced Senator Solomon Adeola as the party’s governorship candidate in Ogun State, describing it as inconsistent with APC guidelines.

She said although she had publicly and privately agreed to abide by any consensus arrangement, she was not properly consulted before Adeola was announced as the consensus candidate. She also alleged that the process violated party rules requiring full engagement among aspirants.

Obasanjo further claimed that some of her supporters were prevented through violence from accessing the venue where the announcement was made.

Despite her objections, she said she maintained party unity by congratulating the candidate and pledging support for him. She added that Adeola later reached out to appreciate her gesture and subsequently held a meeting with her and her supporters.

During the meeting, she said her supporters presented three requests, which were not mandatory, and the senator promised to respond within a week. However, she alleged that no response was received more than two months later.

Obasanjo stated that this incident was part of a broader pattern of neglect and lack of recognition she experienced within the party.

In her resignation letter, she wrote that she had earlier committed to respecting the party’s consensus decision but felt sidelined during the process, despite her contributions to strengthening APC support in Ogun Central and across the state.

She added that repeated experiences of what she described as disrespect and exclusion ultimately made her decision unavoidable, quoting that when “disrespect is the only dish served, one should leave the table.”

Despite her grievances, she expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Ogun APC Chairman Chief Yemi Sanusi, and Ogun Central Senatorial Chairman Chief Soremi for their treatment of her during her time in the party.

Prof. Obasanjo had rejoined partisan politics in January when she registered as an APC member in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. Her return had earlier sparked speculation about a possible governorship bid ahead of the 2027 elections.
