A British-Nigerian singer and songwriter, Talay Riley, has died following a stabbing incident in East London, prompting a murder investigation by police.
The artist, whose real name was Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was reportedly attacked around 9am on Friday on Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown, according to the Newham Recorder. Emergency responders arrived at the scene but were unable to save the 35-year-old.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Specialist Crime Command have since opened a homicide investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a statement, his family confirmed the tragic news, expressing deep grief over the loss of the singer, who was widely known in the music industry.
“It is with overwhelming sadness that we confirm that Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi, professionally known as Talay Riley, passed away yesterday morning,” the family said.
They described him as a talented Grammy-recognised and multi-platinum songwriter and artist, noting that his humour, generosity, and personality would be greatly missed.
The family also appreciated the public for the outpouring of support during the difficult period, thanking those who reached out with messages, calls, and visits.
Talay Riley, who was the brother of music producer Scribz Riley, had built a long-standing career in R&B, securing a publishing deal with Global Publishing at 18 and later signing with Jive/Sony Records after featuring on Chipmunk’s 2009 track.
His brother, Scribz Riley, paid an emotional tribute on Instagram, describing him as a mentor, inspiration, and “a light in so many people’s lives,” adding that he was devastated by the loss.
He wrote that their last conversation had been filled with plans for the future, saying he never imagined it would be their final exchange. He also praised his brother’s kindness, generosity, and lasting impact on those around him, noting that his legacy would live on through his music and loved ones.
