Saudi Arabia’s monarch, King Salman, 90, is undergoing medical examinations at a hospital in the capital, Riyadh, the Royal Court announced on Friday.

In a statement released via state media, the court said the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques was receiving routine medical tests at King Faisal Specialist Hospital.

Saudi authorities have repeatedly sought to dispel speculation surrounding the king’s health, which has often drawn public attention due to his advanced age.

King Salman has ruled the kingdom since 2015, although his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who was appointed in 2017, serves as the country’s de facto leader.

Details of the monarch’s health are rarely made public, but he has undergone several medical procedures and tests in recent years. In 2024, the Royal Court disclosed that he was treated for lung infections, from which he later recovered.

He was hospitalised in May 2022 for a colonoscopy and additional examinations, remaining under medical care for just over a week. Earlier that year, in March, he was admitted for what officials described as successful medical tests, including the replacement of his pacemaker battery.

In 2020, King Salman also underwent surgery to remove his gall bladder.
