The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has honored Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, after he announced his immediate retirement from international football.
In a statement shared on Friday, the NFF called Troost-Ekong a “dedicated, selfless, and humble leader” who played a key role for the national team over his ten years in the squad.
The statement said, “After carefully considering his 10-year journey with the Senior National Team, the Nigeria Football Federation wants to pay tribute to William Troost-Ekong following his decision to retire from international football on Thursday, 4 December 2025.”
The federation praised the defender for his strong passion, pride, and professionalism since he first played for the team in 2015.
It noted that even before becoming captain, Troost-Ekong stood out for his discipline, ambition, and commitment each time he wore the green-and-white jersey.
The Nigeria Football Federation highlighted his important work in big tournaments, saying his play during the 2019, 2021, and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set a good example for younger players.
He got silver and bronze medals in the championship and also played in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where he helped Nigeria a lot with his goals.
The federation said, “With 83 caps across five competitions, he leaves the game feeling satisfied and proud of his ten years of service.”
Troost-Ekong was also praised for his strong performance in the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where he scored three important goals and was named the Man of the Competition.
