Troops of Operation Ensuring Peace (OPEP) have successfully rescued retired Nigerian Army Colonel Ajanaku following his abduction by unknown gunmen in Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The Nigerian Army Headquarters confirmed the successful operation in a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Tuesday.

According to The Media, the retired officer was kidnapped from his residence opposite the Salvation Army Church along Rukuba Road, Bassa LGA, on Monday.

According to the statement, following the distress call, troops swiftly mobilised and tracked the kidnappers along their escape route through the Wildlife Park.

“The troops, working alongside the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) Tracking Team and local vigilantes, conducted intensive search and rescue operations, combing suspected criminal hideouts, including caves and rocky high grounds within the area.

“Later in the day, around 1400 hours, the kidnappers contacted the wife of the abducted officer, demanding a ransom of Two Hundred Million Naira (₦200,000,000).

“Faced with the overwhelming presence and pressure from pursuing troops, the kidnappers threatened to kill the victim if the search operations continued.

“In response, troops shifted to covert operations, which led to the successful rescue of Colonel Ajanaku (Rtd) at approximately 1730 hours on 5 January 2026 at the outskirts of the Rafiki Axis, Bassa LGA, Plateau State, without any ransom payment.

“The rescued officer is currently undergoing a medical examination at the Operation ENDURING PEACE Medical Centre and is reported to be in stable condition. He will also be debriefed to provide vital intelligence to support ongoing follow-up operations,” the statement added.
