NO MORE LONG WAITS: FRSC LAUNCHES INSTANT DRIVER’S LICENCE SYSTEM

Getting a driver’s licence in Nigeria is about to get a lot easier. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has unveiled a new contactless biometric capture system that will allow applicants to get their permanent licences on the spot — no more waiting weeks or months.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, announced the development in Abuja during the launch of the 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign.

According to him, the new system will eliminate delays, reduce physical contact, and phase out temporary licences completely.

“Once you’re captured, you get your licence immediately. There will be no more temporary licences or long waiting periods — no more two weeks, one month or a year,” Mohammed said.

He also revealed that the FRSC has upgraded its printing facilities to speed up production. The Deputy Corps Marshal, Aliyu Datsama, said the agency has already cut the backlog of unprinted licences from about 800,000 to 400,000 and is now producing up to 40,000 daily. He assured that all pending applications will be cleared before the end of November 2025.

Mohammed noted that road crash deaths have dropped compared to last year and promised tougher enforcement during the Ember Months to curb speeding, fatigue, overloading and phone use while driving.

He also announced that Nigeria will host the International Conference on Road Crash Victims for Africa from November 16 to 18, 2025, in partnership with the KRSD Road Safety Foundation, to strengthen post-crash care across the continent.
