When an international opportunity slipped away due to visa constraints, Nigerian endurance athlete Akinrodoye Dare Samuel, popularly known as Coach Dreh, chose not to pause his ambition, but to expand it.

Instead of competing abroad, he is bringing the world of elite endurance sports home.

On September 27, 2026, Coach Dreh will attempt The 226 Challenge, a full-distance triathlon covering 226 kilometres across four Nigerian states in what is being described as a groundbreaking sporting initiative.

The journey will begin with a 3.8-kilometre swim at Owala Lake in Osun State, followed by a demanding 180-kilometre cycling route cutting across Osun, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos States, before culminating in a 42.2-kilometre marathon at the Lagos State Government House.

Recall that in 2024, Dreh swam across the 11.8-kilometre-long water of the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, to raise awareness on mental health.

‎The feat started from Oworonshoki, on the Mainland and ended at Adeniji Adenle on the Island.

‎He swam for 2 hours 33 minutes to complete the breath-taking exercise.

For Coach Dreh, the challenge is more than a test of physical endurance, it is a statement.

“If the opportunity doesn’t come to us, we will create it ourselves,” he said, reflecting on the setback that inspired the initiative.

A RACE BEYOND DISTANCE

‎The 226 Challenge is not just about number, it is about pushing boundaries.

Endurance events of this scale are rare even on the global stage, and bringing such an initiative to Nigeria signals a growing appetite for alternative sports and high-performance challenges within the country.

‎Organisers say the event is designed to inspire a new generation of Nigerians to embrace discipline, resilience, and healthy living.

‎It also aims to spotlight Nigeria’s potential as a destination for world-class sporting events.

UNITING FOUR STATES, ONE VISION

Spanning Osun, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos, the route symbolises more than geography, it represents unity.

‎Communities along the route are expected to witness and participate in the experience, creating a shared moment that blends sport, culture, and national pride.

A DIGITAL-FIRST EXPERIENCE

In a bid to make the event accessible beyond physical spectators, organisers are integrating technology into the experience.

With live tracking, real-time updates, and interactive mapping, supporters will be able to follow every stage of the journey as it unfolds.

A CALL TO BUILD SOMETHING BIGGER

Beyond the individual feat, The 226 Challenge is being positioned as a platform for collaboration.

Corporate organisations, government bodies, and private partners are being invited to contribute to what could become a defining moment in Nigeria’s sporting landscape.

REDEFINING WHAT’S POSSIBLE

As preparations gather momentum, one message remains clear: limitations can be reimagined.

‎What began as a missed opportunity is now evolving into a national movement, one that challenges not just the body, but the mindset of what is possible.

On September 27, all eyes may well be on a single athlete, but the story he tells could resonate far beyond the finish line.
