The National Population Commission (NPC) has unveiled a digital registration platform that allows Nigerians to register births and deaths and obtain certificates online, reducing the need for physical visits in many cases.
NPC Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, announced the launch of the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system and the VitalReg platform during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to Yusuf, the platform became operational nationwide on July 1, 2026, covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
He described the initiative as a major milestone in modernising Nigeria’s civil registration system and improving access to essential identity services.
The NPC boss said the digital platform offers faster processing, 24-hour online access, digital certificate issuance where applicable, improved data validation and a more secure national civil registration database.
He added that the innovation would reduce paperwork, waiting times and travel costs for Nigerians seeking registration services.
Yusuf noted that the reform reflects the commission’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance service delivery, strengthen data integrity and ensure accurate documentation of births and deaths across the country.
He revealed that Nigeria records an estimated five million births annually, yet millions of births and deaths remain unregistered.
According to him, birth registration coverage currently stands at about 57 per cent nationwide, while death registration remains below 20 per cent, limiting access to legal identity and reliable demographic data for national planning.
To improve coverage, the commission has established 4,011 functional registration centres across the country’s 774 local government areas and plans to expand the network to about 8,000 centres.
Yusuf also disclosed that the NPC has partnered with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, the National Identity Management Commission, UNICEF and Barnksforte Technologies Limited to decentralise birth registration and legal identity services at the grassroots level.
He explained that the VitalReg platform is designed to integrate with Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem and support the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda.
While some specialised administrative services, including record modifications, certificate reissuance, attestations and verification requests, will attract revised fees to sustain the digital infrastructure, Yusuf assured Nigerians that birth registration and birth notification services would remain highly subsidised.
He stressed that the review would not create barriers to access and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to achieving universal registration.
The NPC chairman urged parents, guardians and other stakeholders to ensure prompt registration of births and deaths, noting that the success of the reform depends on active public participation.
He said the initiative would help guarantee legal identity for every Nigerian from birth, provide credible demographic data for national development and support effective governance and evidence-based planning.
