Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has called on Nigerians to reject politicians who violate electoral peace agreements ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi made the call on Tuesday in Abuja during the National Peace Accord signing ceremony organised by the National Peace Committee in collaboration with The Kukah Centre.

He said politicians who fail to uphold their commitment to peaceful elections should face consequences at the ballot box.

According to Obi, the appropriate punishment for politicians who breach the peace agreement is for Nigerians to vote them out of office.

The former Anambra State governor also urged political parties and candidates to conduct peaceful and issue-based campaigns focused on the challenges confronting Nigerians.

He stressed that political conduct should reflect the responsibilities attached to the offices being sought, adding that no Nigerian should lose their life because of an election.

Obi further called on politicians to act responsibly without waiting for peace agreements to compel them to maintain peace.

He urged stakeholders to remember and support families of those who lost their lives during the recent Osun State governorship election.

The presidential candidate also reaffirmed his belief in the electoral process, explaining that his desire to reform the system was why he had chosen to participate in it.

He said his major concern ahead of the 2027 election was ensuring that Nigerians were allowed to freely choose their leaders and that their votes counted.

Obi urged political candidates to focus their campaigns on critical national issues, including the economy, insecurity, unemployment and the rising cost of living.
