A police officer serving in Ondo State has died after being stabbed during a violent altercation in the Arakale area of Akure, the state capital.
The unidentified officer was reportedly involved in a dispute with some individuals, which escalated into a physical confrontation. One of the suspects allegedly stabbed the officer, who was later rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday evening.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, said two suspects identified as 25-year-old Shina Jacob and 32-year-old Felix Olalekan had been arrested.
“The command confirms that an incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday involving a police officer performing lawful duty in the area.
“An altercation ensued between the officer and some recalcitrant individuals, during which the officer was tragically stabbed,” Ayanlade said.
He noted that the Commissioner of Police had immediately deployed a team of operatives to the scene, resulting in the swift arrest of the suspects.
“The injured officer was rescued and rushed to the hospital; however, despite all efforts, he sadly passed away while receiving treatment,” he added.
Ayanlade stressed that the police would not tolerate assaults on law enforcement officers and vowed that the suspects would be prosecuted after investigations are concluded.
The incident comes just days after a mentally unstable individual reportedly killed an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps in the state.
It also adds to the growing number of security personnel targeted across the country. According to a Ripples Nigeria report covering 2023–2025, at least 242 officers have been killed by criminals and non-state actors.
Earlier in February 2025, irate youths in Ifon town, Ondo State, reportedly set a police station ablaze after the alleged death of a detainee in custody, chasing away officers and looting the premises.
Investigations into the latest incident are ongoing.
