A powerful rainstorm struck Bukuru in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Wednesday, leaving behind widespread destruction and raising fresh concerns over the vulnerability of infrastructure to natural disasters in the state.
Eyewitnesses said the storm ripped through the community, damaging homes and toppling the main gate of the Jos South Council Secretariat.
Confirming the incident, Chairman of Jos South LGA, Silas Dung, described the storm as extremely severe, noting that it uprooted all four reinforced columns of the council’s gatehouse and destroyed several homes.
“For the storm to destroy the council secretariat gate built with 25mm rods tells you how powerful it must have been,” Dung said.
The chairman, who visited the affected areas alongside officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), disclosed that at least six houses were completely destroyed, while many others suffered roof and fence damage.
“This is a storm, a natural disaster, not man-made. There was nothing anyone could have done to prevent it,” he stated, adding that the council was still assessing the full extent of the destruction.
Dung assured residents that immediate steps were being taken to mitigate risks posed by weakened structures, including pulling down damaged sections of the secretariat gate. He further pledged that the council would work to support affected households.
Earlier this month, a similar rainstorm wreaked havoc in Shimankar District of Shendam LGA, destroying over 50 houses, including schools and worship centres, underscoring growing concerns over the impact of extreme weather events in Plateau State.
