Over 100 athletes from 24 states are expected to participate in the first National Junior Taekwondo Championships from May 16 to 17 in Abuja.
According to a statement from the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, the event is organised to assist the NTF in the capturing and ranking of young athletes in the country.
The federation said the competition would also help it to discover young athletes that would represent the country at the African Youth Games in Algeria later in the year.
Technical director of the federation Chika Chukwumerije said the federation wants to correct the lack of investment in taekwondo athletes at the grassroots.
He said, “Since its inauguration 40 years ago, the federation has never held youth-level championships, which has resulted in an inconsistency in the country’s ability to produce elite athletes.
“By organising age-grade tournaments like this and encouraging participation, the federation aims to make our medal-winning at internationals a consistent thing.”
