The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has clarified that he aligned with the opposition coalition to contest the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

In a post on his official X handle on Thursday, he said that no one group can change Nigeria alone, adding that to dismantle the APC, bridges must be built even when they are uneasy.

The former Anambra State governor said that members of the coalition have committed to work together towards the 2027 general elections.

He stated, “On the previous day, the coalition representatives officially sanctioned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections, with Distinguished Senator David Mark acting as the National Chairman and H. E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola functioning as the National Secretary.

“Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first.

“This choice was not arrived at casually. It stems from profound contemplation on our current position as a nation and the actions necessary to progress.

“No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls even when those bridges are uneasy.”

Leaders and members of the opposition coalition had converged on the Yar’Dua Centre in Abuja for a meeting on Wednesday, where they announced the ADC as the platform for the 2027 election.

In addition to Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi, and numerous others attended the gathering.

Others include Dino Melaye, Solomon Dalong, Dele Momodu, Gabriel Suswam, Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, Sadique Abubakar.
