The Rivers State Police Command has announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into the brutal killing of Superintendent Bako Angbashim, the former Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ahoada Division, who was murdered and beheaded by suspected cultists in September 2023.

Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, disclosed that three suspected members of the Iceland cult group linked to the crime have been apprehended following credible intelligence.

Operatives of the Octopus Tactical Unit arrested the first suspect, identified simply as K1, who is a known member of the Iceland cult group previously led by the late cult kingpin, 2Baba. Interrogation of K1 led to the arrest of two other suspects: LoveGod Goodluck, who was tracked to Ikata Community in Ahoada East, and Precious Olumini, a fugitive who had earlier escaped from police custody.

Weapons recovered during the arrests include a locally made single-barrel gun, two cartridges, an English-made pump-action rifle, and a locally made pistol. The suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement in the cult group and their roles in violent crimes across the Ahoada-East axis.

Iringe-Koko confirmed that investigations are still ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court once the probe is concluded. She added that efforts are being intensified to track down other fleeing members of the gang and recover additional weapons.

Describing the arrests as a significant milestone in the state’s anti-cultism campaign, Iringe-Koko emphasised the continued threat posed by cult groups who operate with dangerous weapons and leave a trail of violence and grief in their wake.
