Nigeria’s capital experienced heightened tensions yesterday as Nigerians abroad and civil society advocates organized a demonstration at the Ministry of Works, accusing the Federal Government of violating a judicial ruling connected to the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway initiative.

The demonstrators called for equity, appropriate restitution for destroyed properties, and the liberation of an individual purportedly apprehended during the demolition operation.

Guided by activists Declan Ihekaire and Shina Loremikan, the demonstration attracted a substantial audience. Numerous participants carried signs displaying slogans such as ‘From glory to gory’ and ‘Justice for property owners. ’

They alleged that the Ministry of Works had razed structures without offering compensation and had disregarded a judicial decree that mandated a cessation of activities on the project.

“We are assembled to seek justice for Nigerians whose properties were obliterated without recompense. The government cannot persist in ignoring the rule of law,” stated Declan Ihekaire.

The demonstrators asserted that the destruction of properties possessing valid Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), without just compensation, had dissuaded Nigerians abroad from investing in the nation.

They also demanded the prompt release of Ola Ubanla, who was reportedly apprehended by security personnel during the demolition.

“How can we persuade Nigerians from abroad to return and invest in the country, only to have their properties destroyed without compensation? This exemplifies a case of giving and taking away,” Ihekaire emphasized.

Additionally, they accused the Ministry of Works of flouting a court order that had halted further operations on the Lagos-Calabar highway, cautioning that this establishes a perilous precedent.

“We are astonished that the ministry opposed the court’s decision. What has become of our nation? Government officials and state enterprises disregarding the judiciary? We are on a path towards chaos,” Ihekaire stated.

In addition to remuneration, the demonstrators urged the National Assembly to take action and initiate an investigation into the issue.

“We possess sufficient funds to compensate individuals whose assets have been confiscated. Merely a few days ago, our Super Falcons received millions of Naira for their achievements. If we can acknowledge their contributions, we should likewise provide restitution to those whose properties have been destroyed,” stated Shina Loremikan.

The demonstrators pledged to persist in their campaign until their requests are fulfilled.

“We will not waver in this protest. The voices of the populace must be recognized. We will take to the streets once more if necessary,” asserted Ihekaire.

As of the time of this report, neither the Minister of Works nor any senior official had responded to the protest or addressed the press.
