POLICE LAUNCH INVESTIGATION INTO DEATH OF MAN SHOT WHILE SLEEPING WITH FAMILY IN AKWA IBOM CHURCH

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the suspected murder of a 45-year-old man, Mr. Udeme Sunday Uko, who was found dead from a gunshot wound while sleeping with his wife and children inside a church in Ikot Oku Usung village, Ukanafun Local Government Area.
The tragic incident occurred at about 12:10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, according to a statement released Tuesday night by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John.
The police spokesperson said preliminary findings indicate that a gunshot was heard in the church where the family had taken shelter for the night. Mr. Uko was later discovered to have suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head, raising suspicions of suicide or a targeted attack.
“Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the suspected murder of Mr. Udeme Sunday Uko, who was found in a pool of blood while sleeping with his family inside a church,” the statement read.
The police were alerted to the incident by the victim’s wife, prompting the immediate deployment of officers to the scene.
“During the visit, a locally made pistol was recovered as an exhibit,” DSP John stated, adding that the corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
While urging calm, the command assured the public that all necessary resources would be deployed to uncover the truth and bring any culprits to justice.
