The Niger State Police Command has arrested 30 suspects during the Maulud procession in Minna for alleged involvement in thuggery and other related crimes.
The arrests, which took place on Saturday between 7am and 9pm, were made across several locations in the state capital, including Angwan-Sarki, Limawa, Angwan-Daji, New-Market, Sabon-Gari, Kuta Road, Obasanjo Complex, Ogbomosho Street, Lagos Street, and the Central Roundabout.
Command spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the arrests in a statement on Monday, listing recovered exhibits such as three knives, three cutlasses, one iron rod, scissors, cannabis, shisha apparatus, and other illicit substances. He said all suspects are under investigation and will be charged to court.
In a separate operation, the police also intercepted one Muhammad Usman of Guiye-Doko village, Edu LGA, Kwara State, in Makera town. He was reportedly found with two locally fabricated guns and six rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.
During interrogation, Usman confessed that he purchased the weapons in Soba village, Mashegu LGA, Niger State, for ₦180,000 each, along with ammunition for ₦5,000, from an unidentified source. Police say investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the arms fabricator.
Minna has long faced recurring security challenges during large gatherings, with youth gang clashes frequently disrupting events. In response, the state government introduced curfews on commercial motorcycles and tricycles, and in April 2024, Governor Umaru Bago declared a “shoot-at-sight” emergency order against thuggery to restore order.
