KADUNA: NAFDAC ALERTS PUBLIC TO COUNTERFEIT BABY FORMULA EXPIRY DATES

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning over tampered or revalidated SMA Gold First Infant Milk Formula (900g tin) found in circulation in Kaduna State.
In Public Alert No. 06/2026, shared on X on Sunday, NAFDAC reported that a sample of the formula with batch number 22939510A1206, manufactured on 20-01-2025, was falsely marked with an extended expiry date of 20-01-2027.
The product bears the official NAFDAC registration number B1-2783, which corresponds to genuine SMA Gold 1 intended for the Nigerian market and produced by Nestlé.
According to the agency, the tampered formula reportedly caused gastrointestinal distress in a four-month-old infant following consumption.
“Physical inspection of the reported product revealed obvious signs of tampering with the date markings.
The manufacturing and expiry dates on the top preprinted sticker did not match the original underlying print, confirming that the product had been revalidated and altered,” NAFDAC stated.
The agency noted that SMA Gold Infant Formula is a whey-dominant product formulated to replicate the nutritional composition of breast milk for infants from birth to six months.

The agency emphasized that altering a product’s shelf life without regulatory approval undermines its safety and could pose serious health risks to infants.
On the potential hazards, NAFDAC warned that revalidated date markings give a false impression of the formula’s quality and safety.
“Incorrect expiry dates mislead consumers about the product’s freshness and nutritional value. Expired infant formula can contain microbial contamination and degraded nutrients, posing significant risks to infants with developing immune systems,” the agency stated.
NAFDAC has instructed all zonal directors and state coordinators to step up surveillance and remove the tampered product from circulation.

Consumers and healthcare professionals have been urged to report any adverse events or suspected sales of the product to the nearest NAFDAC office, or through the Med-Safety app (Android/iOS), the E-reporting platform on NAFDAC’s website, or via email at pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng.
NAFDAC reiterated its dedication to protecting public health and ensuring that all regulated products in Nigeria comply with established standards of quality, safety, and effectiveness.
