The New York City Police Department has launched a manhunt for the suspect behind the shooting death of 30-year-old Nigerian national Sheriff Shittu at a nightclub in the East Flatbush area of Brooklyn.

The victim’s family has stepped up calls for justice following the killing.

The Media reported on Sunday that Shittu was shot in the early hours of February 14 inside Quilox Lounge.

According to Gothamist, operated by New York Public Radio, police are actively searching for a man suspected of killing a patron at the Brooklyn nightclub on Valentine’s Day.

NYPD officials reported that the shooting occurred following a dispute at a nightclub on Church Avenue near East 95th Street in East Flatbush, around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday.

An NYPD spokesperson stated that the Nigerian victim, Sheriff Shittu, was shot in the head and later pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Centre.

“Police are still investigating the motive for the shooting and have not yet released details about the argument between the individuals involved,” the report added.

The report stated that the suspect was last seen wearing a black jacket and white trousers before fleeing the scene in an unknown direction.

It also noted that Sheriff Shittu is the first gun-violence fatality recorded in the precinct this year, with five people having been shot as of February 15, 2025, according to available data.

Meanwhile, News 12 Brooklyn reported that Shittu’s brothers described him as a kind-hearted individual with aspirations in the fashion industry.

“We’re just feeling sad, and everyone is holding it in. We’re trying to stay strong, but we’re really focused on getting justice for him,” said his younger brother, Salem Shittu.

Reports indicate that Sheriff and his brother were attending a birthday celebration at the nightclub when a dispute between the victim and another patron escalated.

“We don’t understand why security failed to properly screen before someone brought a gun into the club,” Salem added.

“He was being escorted out when the incident happened,” he said.

For the Shittu family, the tragic loss has left a profound void, with justice now their only hope for solace.

The killing comes less than a week after another Nigerian, Khaleed Oladipo, a 20-year-old De Montfort University student, was fatally stabbed in a street attack in Leicester, UK.

Oladipo was reportedly attacked outside a busy university building while on his way home to watch the EFL Cup semi-final between Arsenal F.C. and Chelsea F.C..
