Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the Shi’ite group, on Friday staged a peaceful protest in Sokoto State over the ongoing war in Iran.

The protesters marched through several parts of the Sokoto metropolis while security operatives monitored the procession.

The demonstration, which started from the group’s meeting point in the city, was reported to have remained peaceful throughout.

A security official who monitored the march said the group had earlier notified security agencies of the planned protest, leading to the deployment of personnel to maintain order.

He said, “They informed us in advance about the protest, and we deployed security personnel to provide protection, which is what you are seeing here.

“The demonstration remained largely peaceful as they moved from their meeting point to various parts of the metropolis to express their views.”

The protest comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following military strikes involving the United States and Israel against Iran, which have escalated hostilities across parts of the region and led to casualties in several countries.

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria, a Shi’ite Islamic organisation with a significant following in northern Nigeria, has historically expressed solidarity with Iran and other Shi’ite communities around the world.
