The Super Eagles have expressed deep condolences following the death of former Nigeria international and 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner Henry Nwosu, who died at the age of 62.

In a statement posted on the team’s official X platform on Saturday, the national side commiserated with the family of the late midfielder, recalling his contribution to Nigeria’s historic triumph at the 1980 continental tournament.

“We commiserate with the family of Henry Nwosu on his passing. A member of Nigeria’s historic squad that won the 1980 African Cup of Nations. Rest in peace!” the statement read.

Nwosu was the youngest member of the Green Eagles squad that secured Nigeria’s first AFCON title on home soil in 1980, a landmark achievement that cemented his place in the country’s football history.

The Imo State-born midfielder was widely admired for his vision, creativity and technical ability during his playing career and later became a respected figure in Nigerian domestic football.

After retiring from active football, Nwosu remained involved in the sport as a coach and mentor, helping to nurture younger players and share the experience he gained during his years on the pitch.

His death was announced on Saturday by former teammate and fellow AFCON winner Segun Odegbami, who revealed that the ex-midfielder died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos after spending five days receiving treatment.
