The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, has confirmed that train services on the Abuja-Kaduna route have been fully restored following earlier disruptions this week.
Opeifa shared the update on X on Wednesday, reassuring passengers that enhanced safety and operational measures have been put in place after the Monday, March 16, 2026, incident.
“Normal train operations have now resumed, thanks to the prompt response of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
“Passengers can confidently book their journeys, as upgraded safety protocols and operational standards have been implemented to ensure secure and comfortable travel.”
“We are also pleased to welcome passengers on the AKTS return trip from Rigasa, Kaduna State, yesterday, 17th March 2026, with the support of HRH (Alhaji) Ishaq Ibrahim Tanko, Hakimin Idu District Head, Abuja.
Train services are back to normal — safer and better.”
The NRC boss emphasised that the swift response of the corporation ensured minimal disruption, while reaffirming its commitment to passenger safety and service reliability.
The corporation also confirmed the successful resumption of the AKTS return service from Rigasa in Kaduna State, marking a return to normal operations for rail commuters along the route.
The incident was initially reported around 9:16 a.m. near Asham Station on a downward stretch of the Abuja–Kaduna rail line, involving train KA2. The train had departed Rigasa, made a scheduled stop at Jere, and was continuing its journey.
After leaving Jere, where an additional rear locomotive had been coupled, the locomotive became detached while the train was in motion, rolled forward, and collided with the rear of the train, causing a serious operational incident.
The train, which carried 429 passengers along with crew and security personnel, thankfully recorded no fatalities. Some passengers sustained injuries but received immediate medical attention before the train proceeded to Idu Station in Abuja.
