Daniel Bwala, special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on policy communication, has affirmed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers state, aligning with the position of APC national chairman Nentawe Yilwatda.

Bwala’s remarks come amid ongoing impeachment proceedings against Fubara in the Rivers House of Assembly and a renewed clash of words between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

On January 3, the APC national chairman stated that Fubara, as the sitting governor, leads the party in the state. He emphasized that while governors have the privilege of heading the party at the state level, they must respect inclusion and avoid sidelining other members.

Speaking to the media, Bwala stressed that the governor must be allowed to perform his duties without undue interference. He noted that Wike’s influence is confined to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“I agree with the national chairman that in Rivers state, Governor Fubara is the leader of the APC. Wike is not a member of the APC, so he cannot speak for the party,” Bwala said. “He may be regarded as a leader within the PDP, having been a former governor, but the APC leader in the state is Governor Fubara.”

Bwala added that President Tinubu’s position aligns with party rules and democratic principles. “The president respects party procedures, rule of law, and due process. The party will always uphold that,” he said.

Addressing concerns over Wike’s influence in the federal government, Bwala stated, “Wike has been adequately compensated. The president believes in compensating people, but not at the expense of Nigeria’s interests. President Tinubu provides latitude, but once boundaries are crossed, consequences follow.”

He further emphasized that the tensions between Wike and Fubara are being managed carefully. “When you ask who is the leader of the party, the answer is the governor. The impeachment process must follow the law and constitutional procedures. Court orders are already in place, and nobody should stop Fubara from governing Rivers state,” Bwala said.

“The president also respects the rights of states governed by the PDP. Even where the APC may wish to challenge them, he believes that a governor, regardless of party affiliation, should be allowed to govern,” he added.

Bwala concluded that President Tinubu’s stance underscores his commitment to democratic stability, constitutional order, and party discipline nationwide.
