At least one person has died following a series of crashes on Otedola Bridge, inbound to Secretariat along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, in the early hours of Friday, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the main accident involved two heavy-duty trailers—one carrying sand and the other granite—colliding violently in what appeared to be a reckless contest for the right of way.

The driver of the sand-laden truck was trapped and later pronounced dead at General Hospital, Ikeja, after rescue teams from LASTMA extricated him and handed him over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS). The granite-laden truck driver escaped without injury.

A secondary accident occurred roughly 50 metres from the first when a fully loaded flour truck lost stability and overturned, spilling its cargo across the road. The Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command said the overturned vehicle blocked nearly 90 percent of the carriageway, worsening the gridlock.

Security personnel from the Alausa Police Division were deployed to manage the scene, control crowds, and assist ongoing rescue operations. “Cumulatively, the incidents obstructed nearly 80 percent of the carriageway, necessitating extensive traffic control and diversion measures,” LASTMA stated.

Motorists traveling inbound from Mowe, Kara Bridge, and Redemption Camp were diverted via the Ojodu–Olole route, connecting Agidingbi, Coca-Cola, Secretariat, and 7-Up, before rejoining the highway at Gbagada or Ojota to ease traffic flow.

The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, a vital corridor linking Lagos to the South-South and South-East, has a history of frequent crashes, raising growing concerns about road safety along the route. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution as investigations into the incidents continue.
