The Edo State Ministry of Health has confirmed an outbreak of dengue fever, with 86 reported cases across various parts of the state.

Commissioner for Health, Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, announced this on Friday during a press briefing, assuring residents that the state government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, is fully committed to containing the outbreak and safeguarding public health.

“As of today, 86 cases of dengue fever have been reported in Edo State. The Emergency Operation Centre has been activated, and a statewide response plan is underway,” Dr Oshiomhole said.

To lead the response, the ministry has appointed the Director of Public Health, Dr Stephenson Ojiefoh, as the incident manager. The response plan includes heightened disease surveillance, effective case management, intensified vector control, and large-scale environmental sanitation campaigns.

Dr Oshiomhole urged healthcare workers to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspected cases. He also called on residents to support prevention efforts by keeping their surroundings clean, covering water storage containers, destroying mosquito breeding sites, using mosquito nets, and applying insect repellents.

He explained that dengue fever is caused by a virus transmitted primarily through the bite of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which thrive in environments with poor sanitation and stagnant water.

Representatives of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the State Disease Surveillance Team, and other public health stakeholders were present at the briefing.

In addition to dengue fever, the commissioner revealed that the state is contending with other disease outbreaks. So far, there have been 137 confirmed cases and 24 deaths from various illnesses. These include two confirmed cases of yellow fever with one fatality, eight cases of monkeypox with no deaths, and eight cases of diphtheria resulting in three deaths.

The ministry said it will continue to monitor the situation and urged the public to adhere to health advisories as efforts to contain all ongoing outbreaks intensify.
