Barely 48 hours after a fatal crash claimed 10 lives in Ogun State, tragedy struck again on Sunday as eight people were confirmed dead and eight others injured in a road accident at Atura Bus Stop in the Badagry area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred when a 16-seater commercial Mazda bus, with number plate KJA 811 YF, collided at high speed with a stationary DAF truck, marked T1 4636 LA.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, the crash claimed the lives of eight individuals on the spot, including the bus driver and his conductor.
“The tragic accident instantly claimed the lives of eight passengers, including the driver of the ill-fated bus and his conductor, casting a somber pall over the Badagry axis and leaving the community in profound mourning and collective grief,” Taofiq said.
Eight surviving passengers were rescued by emergency responders, including officials of the Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigerian Army. All the injured were transported to the Badagry General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Taofiq attributed the cause of the accident to reckless speeding, stating that the commercial bus driver lost control of the vehicle before crashing into the truck.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the commercial bus lost control while navigating at a perilously high speed, leading to a catastrophic collision with a DAF truck,” he added.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who visited the crash site, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.
“This heart-wrenching incident is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for all road users to embrace caution. No journey should end in such tragedy,” Bakare-Oki stated.
He also issued a stern warning to commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, urging them to shun excessive speeding and prioritize vehicle maintenance.
Bakare-Oki emphasized the agency’s shift toward a more comprehensive approach to road safety, moving from conventional traffic regulation to holistic incident management, in a bid to reduce avoidable fatalities on Lagos roads.
