FCT POLICE ADVISE NLC TO RESCHEDULE PLANNED PROTEST OVER SECURITY CONCERNS

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has advised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT chapter, to reschedule its planned peaceful protest slated for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, citing security concerns.
The NLC had announced plans to protest over unpaid allowances owed to workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
In a statement issued on Monday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the advice was given in the overriding interest of public safety.
According to the statement, while the Command acknowledges and respects the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest, intelligence reports available to the police indicate plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest, potentially leading to a breakdown of law and order.
“In view of the above, and in the overriding interest of public safety, the FCT Police Command respectfully appeals to the organizers of the planned protest to consider rescheduling the activity to a later date and time,” the statement said.
The police noted that the request was aimed at preventing any disruption of public peace, while safeguarding the rights of other residents to safety, freedom of movement, and the conduct of lawful daily activities.
The Command reassured residents of the FCT of its commitment to the protection of lives and property, and urged the public to continue cooperating with security agencies to maintain peace and security in the territory.
