GUNMEN MASSACRE 13 WORSHIPPERS IN EARLY MORNING ATTACK ON KATSINA MOSQUE

BY OWOLABI OLUWADARA
Devastation occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when armed assailants invaded a mosque in Unguwan Mantau village, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, resulting in the fatalities of 13 congregants during the dawn (Fajr) prayers.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on the congregation at around 5 a.m., shooting indiscriminately inside the mosque.
Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs in Katsina State, who validated the occurrence, stated that the assault is suspected to be a reprisal in response to a recent ambush carried out by villagers against a bandit faction in the region. In the prior incident, numerous bandits were eliminated, kidnap victims were freed, and armaments were seized.
“The victims were engaged in prayer when the assailants began firing indiscriminately,” Mu’azu remarked, adding that military, police, and air force personnel have been dispatched to the region to restore order.
He emphasized that during the rainy season, bandits frequently exploit tall vegetation to obscure their movements and execute unexpected attacks.
The state government lauded the bravery of local inhabitants who have confronted criminal organizations but encouraged closer collaboration with law enforcement agencies to prevent further violence. Authorities have assured that additional support will be provided to protect vulnerable agricultural communities.
Katsina, the native state of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has emerged as a focal point for banditry and violent assaults in Nigeria’s North-West, with armed groups perpetuating mass kidnappings, extortion, and lethal raids despite ongoing military interventions.
