A violent cult clash between members of the Eiye and Maphite confraternities in Evboyare community, Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State, has left one person, identified as Festus, dead.
The Coordinator of the Edo State Government’s Special Security Squad, Idemudia Noah, disclosed this on Thursday in a statement issued by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.
Noah described the scene as bloody, revealing that the residence of the alleged Maphite leader, Felix Aigbedion, had been sealed after intelligence linked him to the crisis. Aigbedion has since been declared wanted for allegedly masterminding the assault that escalated into cult violence.
By the time operatives arrived at Evboyare, the community was reportedly deserted, with homes, vehicles, and personal property destroyed. Two locally-made firearms were also recovered from a poultry house believed to have served as a makeshift armory for cultists.
Acting on further intelligence, security operatives also stormed an unoccupied building in Egbaen, Egor Local Government Area, where a secluded shrine was uncovered behind the premises. The building, said to belong to Marvellous Adetarami, contained a white casket and fetish items suspected to have been used for cult initiation and rituals.
The state government immediately sealed the Egbaen property, signaling its resolve to dismantle both the physical and spiritual infrastructure sustaining cultism across the state.
Noah stressed that Governor Okpebholo’s administration remained uncompromising in its fight against cult-related violence and extortion.
“These measures are not symbolic. They are a clear statement that clandestine activities will no longer find sanctuary in Edo State,” he said.
He warned cultists to renounce membership or leave the state, adding that police had been briefed and prosecutions were underway to ensure peace, stability, and safety across Edo.
