RAZAK OMOTOYOSSI: BENIN’S GOAL MACHINE WHO INSPIRED A NATION, GONE TOO SOON AT 39

BY OWOLABI OLUWADARA
The African football community is mourning the passing of Razak Omotoyossi, the Nigerian-born striker who became a legend in Benin’s national team. He died on August 19, 2025, at the age of 39 (some outlets reported 38), leaving behind a legacy that will forever be remembered across West Africa.
Born on October 8, 1985, in Lagos, Nigeria, Omotoyossi’s journey into football was one of resilience and determination. He began his career at FC Ebedei and Sunshine Stars in Nigeria before moving abroad to build an international career that spanned clubs in Benin, Moldova, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, France, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, and more. Notably, he had successful stints with FC Sheriff, Helsingborgs IF, Al-Nassr, and FC Metz, where his pace and clinical finishing made him a fan favorite.
But it was on the international stage with Benin that Omotoyossi etched his name in history. Between 2004 and 2016, he represented the Cheetahs in 55 matches, scoring 21 goals, making him the second-highest scorer in the nation’s history. His defining moment came in June 2007, when he scored all four goals in Benin’s stunning 4–1 victory over Togo during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. That performance not only secured qualification but also made him the joint top scorer of the campaign alongside Samuel Eto’o—cementing his status as one of Africa’s deadliest forwards of his era.
Omotoyossi’s fearless style of play and ability to rise in big moments made him a symbol of hope for Benin’s football fans. Known for his tireless work ethic and passion, he inspired a generation of players from smaller footballing nations to believe they too could shine on the biggest stage.
His life off the pitch, however, was not without hardship. In recent years, Omotoyossi faced personal struggles, including the loss of his elder sister and reports of a devastating house fire.
These challenges, coupled with an absence from the spotlight, painted the picture of a once-bright star navigating difficult times in silence.
Tributes have since poured in from fans, teammates, and journalists. Nigerian sports journalist Babatunde Ojora described him as “a gifted goalscorer and passionate servant of the game, whose impact on African football will never be forgotten.” On social media, supporters remembered him as “a valiant warrior” whose brilliance brought joy to thousands.
Although the cause of his death remains unclear, what is certain is that Razak Omotoyossi’s story is one of triumph against the odds. From Lagos streets to international arenas, he carried the hopes of a nation and delivered moments that will live on in football history.
As Benin and the wider African football fraternity grieve, one truth endures: legends never die. Omotoyossi’s goals, his fighting spirit, and his journey from Nigeria to Benin’s footballing icon ensure that his legacy will remain eternal.
