The Rivers State Police Command has removed a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Oyigbo Local Government Area following allegations of extortion and professional misconduct levelled against him by a rights activist.

The allegation was raised on Friday by a social media activist who accused the DPO of extorting N500,000 from an individual allegedly arrested and detained at the station without any known offence. The activist also claimed to have shared evidence of the payment online.

He further alleged that the officer preferred what he described as a “ridiculous charge” against a woman involved in a domestic dispute, accusing her of stealing her own children in a case with her estranged husband. The woman was subsequently remanded in a correctional facility following the charge.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Blessing Agabe, confirmed the development, noting that the command had received the complaints and taken immediate action.

The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, ordered the immediate removal of the DPO from office to allow for a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations.

The command said the decision aligns with its commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism, adding that it will not tolerate any form of misconduct or abuse of office.

“The officer concerned has been immediately removed from his position pending the outcome of a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter,” the statement read.

The police assured members of the public that the allegations would be investigated diligently, professionally, and without bias, promising that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken if the officer is found culpable.
