Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday visited flood-affected communities in Eti-Osa Local Government Area to assess the impact of recent flooding and engage with residents affected by the disaster.

The governor, accompanied by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, and other members of the Lagos State Executive Council, toured Ogombo and other flood-hit communities.

The inspection also covered Monastery Road–Sangotedo, Gbetu, Iwerekun and other areas within the Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area.

Footage of the visit shared by Lagos Junction on X showed Sanwo-Olu and members of his entourage wading through knee-deep floodwaters as they inspected affected streets and interacted with residents and community leaders.

The officials, dressed in field attire and protective boots, assessed the extent of the flooding and observed the condition of critical infrastructure in the affected areas.

The visit comes as Lagos continues to contend with seasonal flooding following days of persistent rainfall that submerged roads and disrupted socio-economic activities in several parts of the state.

In some of the affected communities, residents were forced to use canoes to transport people across flooded roads as many streets remained impassable.

The residents appealed to the state government to implement immediate and long-term flood control measures to enable them to return to their homes, businesses and normal daily activities.

The Lagos State Government had earlier directed emergency dredging and drainage maintenance works across multiple drainage channels to improve stormwater discharge and reduce the risk of future flooding.

Speaking on the flooding in a statement issued last month, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, attributed the situation to an extreme weather event that overwhelmed existing drainage infrastructure.

“The Lagos State Government called for calm and understanding from residents following the massive flash flooding experienced in many parts of the state over the last two weeks, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approving the immediate dredging and maintenance of 28 additional primary channels across the state,” Wahab said.

He explained that the intense rainfall produced an unusually high volume of water within a short period, resulting in temporary flooding in several communities, including Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikeja, Gbagada, Mushin and Mafoluku.

According to him, the flooding was not unique to Lagos, noting that several African countries and parts of North America experienced similar extreme weather conditions during the same period.

The commissioner also noted that earlier interventions carried out in nearby Eti-Osa communities such as Ajiran and Agungi had improved stormwater discharge after drainage channels were cleared and restored to their natural waterways.
