The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 75-year-old man, Uchelue Ikechukwu, alongside several other suspects, in a series of nationwide operations that also led to the destruction of over 178,000 kilograms of cannabis cultivated on a massive farm in Taraba State.
The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
According to the NDLEA, Ikechukwu was arrested with 26.7kg of skunk at Umudioka, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday, August 28. Six other suspects were also picked up in Nkwelle and Amichi areas of the state for dealing in cannabis and opioids.
In Taraba, operatives backed by the military and vigilantes stormed a 71.5-hectare cannabis farm in Mayodoga forest, Sardauna Local Government Area, where they destroyed 178,750kg of cannabis. The farm owner, 30-year-old Alfa Andrew, was arrested with a Dane gun.
The NDLEA also intercepted a fuel tanker loaded with 104,900 capsules of tramadol at the Abuja-Kaduna tollgate, allegedly headed for insurgents in Borno State. The driver, Hassan Buba, was arrested. In a related operation, Kabir Sulaiman, 45, was caught with 34.1kg of skunk at a checkpoint in Zaria.
Other major seizures across the country include:
N7.9 million cash recovered from the Maiduguri apartment of a major supplier, Uchenna Umeh (33), alongside 30,640 pills of tramadol and 7,940 tablets of rohypnol.
79,040 pills of tramadol and diazepam seized in Nasarawa, hidden in sacks and a freezer.
502,280 pills of opioids recovered across Gombe, Kano, Adamawa, Lagos, Ondo, and Edo states.
117.5kg of cannabis seized in Ondo State.
The arrest of a 42-year-old drug kingpin, Ajayi Ayodeji Idowu (alias Atiku), in Ado-Ekiti with what NDLEA described as Ekiti’s single largest seizure of Loud, Colorado, and methamphetamine.
Babafemi noted that the coordinated raids highlight NDLEA’s sustained offensive against drug trafficking across the country, stressing that the agency will continue to track syndicates and dismantle drug networks.
