LAGOS GOVT POSTPONES LEKKI–AJAH ROAD REHABILITATION INDEFINITELY AMID TRAFFIC CONCERNS

The Lagos State Government has indefinitely postponed the scheduled rehabilitation of the Lekki–Ajah corridor, which was initially set to commence on November 15, 2025, and run for eight months until July 2026.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the government did not disclose specific reasons for the deferral. However, it noted that preliminary site preparation will proceed until the end of November 2025.

The decision follows growing concerns from residents and commuters who feared that starting the project at this time would exacerbate traffic congestion during the peak festive “Detty December” period, known for increased movement, events, and heavy vehicular activity.

Many residents have reportedly welcomed the postponement, describing it as a relief and praising the government for preventing potential disruptions to daily commutes and holiday plans.

A new start date has not been announced. Authorities previously held stakeholder meetings to discuss traffic management for similar road projects across the state.

Although the rehabilitation remains a key component of Lagos’ broader infrastructure upgrade initiatives, the latest decision is seen as a response to public feedback and a move to mitigate mobility challenges associated with high-demand travel periods.
