The Ogun State Police Command has reported that its Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit rescued a man impersonating a soldier from being lynched by a mob in the Olomore area of Abeokuta, the state capital.
The command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the intervention followed a distress call received by the command’s Cyber Centre, which indicated that a crowd had surrounded a man dressed in full military camouflage and were preparing to attack him.
Odutola noted that the swift action of the SWAT operatives prevented what could have been a fatal mob incident.
She stated, “The incident occurred after the command’s Cyber Centre received a distress call, alerting officers that a man in full military green camouflage was surrounded by a crowd and at risk of being lynched.
“SWAT operatives quickly rushed to the scene, and upon their arrival, the mob dispersed, enabling the safe rescue of the suspect.”
Odutola added that intelligence gathered suggested the suspect was accused of stealing two mobile phones from a resident before being pursued and apprehended by local youths.
She stated, “Open-source intelligence further indicated that the suspect, 31-year-old Robinson Godday, allegedly stole two mobile phones from a young man in the area.
“His attempt to flee was unsuccessful, as he was surrounded by a large crowd intent on carrying out mob justice.”
“He was subsequently attacked by the angry youths, sustaining an injury to his right leg.”
The command added that the recovered mobile phones were returned to their owner by the crowd before police intervened.
During preliminary questioning, the 31-year-old suspect, identified as Robinson Godday, reportedly admitted that he was not a member of the military.
Odutola stated, “The suspect confessed that he was not a military officer and admitted that he had stolen the uniform from a soldier stationed at Ojo Military Barracks, Lagos, who is currently on deployment in the North-East.”
The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered increased security checks in the area to prevent similar incidents.
According to Odutola, the CP condemned the mob action and instructed that increased raids and stop-and-search operations be conducted around Olomore to prevent similar incidents.
She added that the suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The command also warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, urging them to report and hand over suspects to law enforcement authorities.
