JUDGES STOOD IN RESPECT FOR TINUBU RATHER THAN SINGING ‘ON YOUR MANDATE’- NJI

BY JENN NOMAMIUKOR The National Judicial Institute (NJI) has refuted social media rumors that judges supported President Bola Tinubu by singing the political song "On Your Mandate We Shall Stand" during the 2025 All Nigeria Judges Conference opening ceremony. A video that went viral on social media on Tuesday showed judges getting up as the president was ushered to the stage to address the conference as the signature song was playing. In a statement on Wednesday, the NJI described the video as misleading, clarifying that the only song collectively rendered by...

SENATE REOPENS INVESTIGATION INTO ELRA CRISIS

HOTJIST NEWS The Equipment Leasing Registration Authority's long-running leadership problem was addressed by the Senate on Wednesday, which reopened inquiries into the alleged illegal dismissal of Saidu Njidda, the agency's former acting chief executive officer. Shortly after President Bola Tinubu took office, the Federal Government disbanded the governing boards of ministries, departments, and agencies, sparking the crisis that has festered since mid-2023. ELRA had a protracted administrative void following the dissolution, which was declared in a circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Tension inside ELRA increased due to the lack of a transparent transition or disengagement process, which resulted in a number of petitions from disgruntled stakeholders, halted operations, and accusations of arbitrary decision-making. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen, examined the petition on Wednesday, requesting that lawmakers step in and order Njidda's restoration while the ELRA Act is being amended. Prof. Ibrahim Madugu, a NAC representative, contended that the previous CEO's dismissal was illegitimate. He urged lawmakers to ensure strict adherence to Section 8(a) of the...

SSANU LAMENTS POOR PACE OF RENEGOTIATIONS WITH FG

BY JENN NOMAMIUKOR As the four-week deadline for the Federal Government to respond to the unions' requests expires, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in cooperation with unions in postsecondary institutions, The government's sluggish negotiations with university unions over their demands have deeply frustrated the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, or SSANU. Recall that on October 20, NLC, along with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, SSANU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, among other unions in higher education, gave the Federal Government a four-week deadline to resolve the union crisis. However, several of the unions have bemoaned the lack of progress after four weeks. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, criticized the administration of insincerity in handling their requests notably the re-negotiation of the 2009 Agreement. Although negotiations with the government have formally restarted, Comrade Ibrahim, who also serves as Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), which is made up of SSANU and NASU, disclosed that progress has remained extremely slow. "After our meeting with the government team, they requested that we submit our demands again, which we did three weeks ago. There has not been any further consultation or acknowledgment since then, he claimed. Asked the next line of action as the four-week ultimatum has expired,...
