Tragedy struck Fegge area of Onitsha, Anambra State, on Sunday as an 18-year-old apprentice allegedly killed his master during a heated altercation.
The suspect, identified as Chiemerie, reportedly attacked his boss, Iyke, with a mortar pestle after being scolded over alleged pilfering of money and drug use.
Eyewitnesses said the victim was a businessman at the popular Ogbo-Ogwu Bridgehead Medicine Market, one of the major trading hubs in the commercial city.
“The boy picked a pestle from the kitchen and struck his master on the head during an argument on Sunday evening,” an eyewitness said. “He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.”
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident on Monday. The Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect has been arrested and the weapon recovered.
“Yes, the incident happened on Sunday. The suspect is in custody, and the pestle used in the attack has been recovered,” Ikenga stated. He added that the altercation escalated after the deceased reprimanded the apprentice for alleged misconduct.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Fegge community, raising concerns over rising cases of violence involving apprentices.
In a similar case in 2023, the Ondo State Police Command arrested a 20-year-old apprentice for allegedly killing his master and dumping the body in a well.
