Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the All Progressives Congress (APC) congresses in the state, saying the process is promoting unity between long-standing and new party members.
Speaking on Saturday in Kaiama, headquarters of Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area (KOLGA), during the party’s local government congress, Diri said the successful ward and local government congresses had helped bridge divisions within the party, describing members as functioning “as one family.”
“As I have said, there are no longer old or new members of the APC in the state. There should be no segregation of any kind,” he stated.
He added, “If you look at the newly elected party executives, some have been in the APC for a long time while others have just joined. We have created an environment for all members to integrate and work together for the party’s success.”
The governor also highlighted the importance of grassroots victories, expressing confidence that the APC would secure a strong showing in upcoming local government elections.
“We must win at the ward level. By next year, during the local government chairmen and councillors elections, I am confident APC will capture all the seats,” he said.
Diri declared that the APC had emerged as the dominant political force in Kolokuma/Opokuma, noting that nearly 90% of political leaders in the area now belong to the party.
“God has made it possible that, for the first time, almost 90 per cent of all political leaders in Kolokuma/Opokuma are in APC,” he said.
He expressed confidence that in any future elections, the APC would secure a clean sweep in the state, while opposition parties would struggle to win significant support.
The governor urged newly elected party executives and state congress delegates to prioritise the re-election of Bola Tinubu in 2027, aiming to deliver overwhelming support for the APC.
“Next year, we will have the presidential election. This is our top priority, and in Kolokuma/Opokuma, we can secure 95 per cent of the votes,” he said.
The congress, overseen by Kolokuma/Opokuma APC election committee chairman Mr. Marlin Daniel, saw Mr. Panebi Dipagha emerge as chairman by consensus, alongside 26 other executive members.
The exercise was observed by APC state congress committee chairman Chief Frank Omare, screening committee chairman Hon. Oghene Egho, and an official from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In his acceptance speech, Dipagha thanked party leaders for the opportunity to serve, pledged to operate within party laws, and commended Governor Diri’s leadership style, promising a consultative approach in decision-making.
