Lecturers and non-academic staff from several tertiary institutions in Plateau State on Friday unveiled a platform aimed at supporting the re-election bids of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Caleb Mutfwang in 2027.

The platform, known as “Plateau Academics for Tinubu-Mutfwang 2027,” was inaugurated in Jos and comprises members drawn from more than 20 federal, state and private tertiary institutions across the state.

Speaking at the event, the State Coordinator of the platform and Head of the Department of Social Science Education at the University of Jos, Associate Professor Augustine Azi, said the academic community was mobilising to contribute meaningfully to the political and developmental direction of both the state and the nation.

According to him, academics hold a strategic place in society.

“We occupy a unique position in society. Our voices carry influence, our ideas shape policy discussions, and our actions often inspire communities far beyond the walls of our institutions,” he said.

“Plateau State hosts more than 20 federal, state and private tertiary institutions. Across these institutions, there are over 15,000 academic staff, more than 30,000 non-teaching staff and about 350,000 students.

“This places the academic community among the most influential centres of leadership and social impact in the state. It is therefore both strategic and necessary for the academic community to organise itself in order to contribute meaningfully to the political and developmental direction of our state and the nation,” Azi said.

He further explained that the establishment of the Plateau Academics for Tinubu-Mutfwang 2027 platform is driven by the belief that governance should be strengthened by informed perspectives, credible analysis and constructive engagement.

“The initiative is not merely about political endorsement. Rather, it seeks to promote governance through intellectual advocacy, policy dialogue and evidence-based assessment of leadership,” he added.

He said the platform is founded on the belief that the leadership of Governor Caleb Mutfwang and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu offers an opportunity for stability and progressive reforms.

According to him, both academic and non-academic staff intend to ensure that their engagement reflects the principles of scholarship.

“Our platform will be policy-focused, reform-driven, development-oriented and grounded in credibility. We want to demonstrate that support for leadership can be thoughtful, analytical and guided by evidence rather than sentiment,” he said.

Also speaking, the Provost of the College of Education, Gindiri, and patron of the platform, Prof. Lazarus Maigoro, commended Mutfwang’s commitment to tertiary education in the state. He cited the approval of funds for accreditation exercises and the absorption of ad-hoc staff as examples of the governor’s support for the sector.

“With these positive developments taking place at both the state and national levels, we believe it is important for us to also mobilise support that will enable them to continue the good work,” Maigoro said.

Similarly, the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Plateau State, Jeremiah Satmark, described the initiative as encouraging, noting that the academics’ support reflects recognition of the governor’s efforts.

“We have brighter days ahead because His Excellency has been pursuing numerous developmental projects,” Satmark said.

The platform is expected to promote governance through intellectual advocacy, policy dialogue and evidence-based evaluation of leadership, with the aim of ensuring that political support is guided by informed and constructive participation.
